Purpose – To examine issues and provide current guidelines in the care of those with chronic non-cancer pain who have current or recovering addictive disease or other abusive drug behaviors.

Objectives:
-Review development and mechanisms of chronic pain.
-Define addiction and clarify the differences among non-addictive behaviors often identified as addiction.
-Discuss legal/ethical considerations in caring for the addicted individual.
-Review pertinent clinical guidelines.
-Discuss levels of pain medications and management as applied to the addict.
